Valeda™ Light Therapy, an FDA-Authorized treatment designed for patients with dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
Valeda uses photobiomodulation (PBM) – a non-invasive light therapy that delivers specific wavelengths of light to the retina. This process helps stimulate cellular activity, improve retinal function, and may slow the progression of dry AMD.
Photobiomodulation is a non-invasive treatment that uses specific wavelengths of red, yellow, and near-infrared light to stimulate cellular function. In the case of dry AMD, it targets the mitochondria (the "powerhouses") in retinal cells to improve energy production and reduce inflammation.
Not at all. Patients simply sit in front of the Valeda device with their eyes open or closed (depending on the specific wavelength being used). There is no surgery, no injections, and no downtime. Most patients find the sessions quick and comfortable.
Each session is very fast—typically less than 5 minutes per eye. Because it’s so efficient, it’s easy for patients to fit into their daily schedules.
Clinical protocols usually involve a series of sessions over a set period (often 9 sessions over 3 weeks). Your surgeon will customize a schedule based on your specific eye health and the current progression of the AMD.
Valeda is FDA-authorized and has a high safety profile. Unlike some laser treatments, it does not use heat to "burn" tissue. Some patients may experience a temporary "after-image" (similar to a camera flash) that dissipates shortly after the session.
While there is currently no "cure" for dry AMD, Valeda is designed to slow the progression of the disease and improve visual function. The goal is to preserve your vision for as long as possible.
Results vary by individual. Some patients notice an improvement in light sensitivity or detail after their first full round of treatments, while for others, the primary benefit is the stabilization of their vision over time.
